It could be karma. Or just musical genius. Whichever it is, Soundarya Rajinikanth will be counting her lucky stars that A R Rahman chose her father's 'lucky mascot' S P Balasubrahmanyam to sing Engae Pogudho Vaanam for the Superstar's upcoming flick, Kochadaiiyaan. Despite the fact that the single (song), released online at midnight on Monday, drew only 61,759 views on Facebook till 6 pm, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
With fans hailing the song as Rahman's best in recent times, this will be of some cheer for the Kochadaiiyaan team — who were battered by criticism that the film looked like an "ancient video game" when the teaser released on September 8. Inspite of all the bad vibes that the teaser received, it garnered a massive 4 lakh views on the first day itself. Singers like Haricharan Sesh were vocal about their praise for the classy song and it's videos that have been playing non-stop on Youtube, through Monday.
It is common knowledge that S P Balasubrahmanyam has had the 'responsibility' of singing Rajini's introduction song for almost all his movies for the past two decades — an association that began with Muthu (Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalali), Padayappa (En Paeru Padayappa) and has extended to the more recently released Enthiran (Puthiya Manitha). Needless to say, almost every film that Rajinikanth acted in since then has been a hit, barring Baba. Veteran filmmaker Suresh Krissna, who had directed Rajinikanth in films Baasha, Annamalai and Veera, says SPB is the superstar's lucky mascot. "SPB has given hundreds of hits for Rajinikanth. He could very well be considered his successful voice. This title track sentiment has always had an effect on the audience," Suresh said. "Audiences strongly believe in this sentiment and it has worked in the favour of the makers. I'm hoping it works again and I'm eagerly waiting for the song as much as everyone else," he added.
In fact, the only break from tradition that the SPB-Rajini duo have had in all this time was the rather ill-fated Kuselan, in which Shankar Mahadevan handled the intro track (Cinema Cinema). The film is slated for a December 12 release.
